The number of new homes in the United States, the construction of which was started in January, decreased by 4.5% compared to the revised figure in December and amounted to 1.309 million, the U.S. Department of Commerce said in a statement.

Compared to January 2022, the number of new homes in the United States in the reporting month fell by 21.4%.

At the same time, the number of construction permits in the United States in January increased by 0.1% to December - up to 1.339 million. Analysts had expected a figure of 1.35 million permits. The December value was revised up to 1.337 million from the original 1.33 million.

The volume of New Home sales is an important indicator of the state of the real estate market and the economy as a whole. Its increase leads to an increase in the costs of new homeowners for furniture and housing services, which, in turn, stimulates demand for goods, services and labor. In addition, more than half of all construction in the United States is accounted for by the housing stock. Thus, the dynamics of residential real estate sales along the chain is transferred to other sectors of the economy.
