Pulp

Pulp is a fibrous material made by separating plant fibers—most commonly from wood—and is used mainly as the raw material for making paper and paper products.

Pulp consists of cellulose fibers, which come from trees or other plants such as bamboo, straw, or sugarcane bagasse. To produce pulp, raw materials are processed to break down the plant structure and free the fibers. This can be done in several ways:

• Mechanical pulping, which grinds wood into fibers
• Chemical pulping, which uses chemicals to dissolve unwanted components like lignin
• Semi-chemical pulping, a combination of both methods

Once produced, pulp can be used directly to make paper, cardboard, and packaging materials, or it can be dried and transported for later use. Pulp may also be bleached to increase whiteness, depending on its application.

Beyond paper production, pulp is used in making tissue products, textiles such as viscose and rayon, biodegradable materials, and some chemical products.

In short, pulp is the basic fibrous substance that forms the foundation of the pulp and paper industry and many fiber-based products used in everyday life.
