Hungary is an industrial and agrarian state. Horticulture and viticulture are highly developed in the country. Mechanical engineering, production of communications equipment, measuring instruments, machine tools, chemical, pharmaceutical, metallurgical (especially aluminum, based on bauxite deposits), textile, food and beverage industries are developed.

International tourism is of great importance. The stable position in the economy and society has made Hungary one of the most attractive countries in Eastern Europe for foreign investment in recent years.

The total recoverable reserves of Hungary's natural energy resources, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (as of December 2015), are estimated at 0.523 billion tons (in coal equivalent), of which almost 97% is coal.
