Ghana is an agrarian country. The basis of the economy is agriculture and mining.

Agriculture employs about 44% of the able-bodied population, it provides about 20% of GDP. The main agricultural crop is cocoa beans, for the collection of which the country ranks 2nd in the world after Ivory Coast. The area of cocoa bean plantings occupies more than half of the cultivated lands of the country. Yams, cassava, corn, rice, tomatoes and oranges are also grown. Forestry is developed, valuable wood species are exported — vava, mahogany, odum, sapele and utile. Approximately 450 thousand tons of fish are caught annually.

Industry employs 14.4% of the able-bodied population, it provides 27.7% of GDP. The main industry is the mining industry, which provides half of the country's foreign exchange earnings. Gold, manganese, diamonds, and silver are mined.

The manufacturing industry is mainly represented by the light and food industries — coconut, palm and peanut oils, canned food, juices are produced, there are factories of the woodworking, shoe, textile, tobacco, chemical and glass industries.

There is a large hydroelectric power plant in Akosombo (1020 MW).

In 2007, quite significant oil reserves (about 3 billion barrels) were discovered in the coastal strip.

Total energy reserves are estimated at 0.141 billion tons (in coal equivalent). At the end of 2019, the net installed capacity of power plants is 5,382 MW, including: thermal power plants burning organic fuel — 69.8%, renewable energy sources - 30.1%.
