Belarus is an industrial state; it has developed agriculture and mechanical engineering. A significant part of the products of these sectors of the economy is exported. The developed transport network contributes to the development of the republic's economy.

Total energy reserves are estimated at 0.123 billion tons (in coal equivalent). Installed capacity — net of power plants — 10,183 MW, including: thermal power plants burning organic fuel — 96.4%, renewable energy sources — 3.6%.

Agriculture in Belarus is an important branch of the economy, providing 5.1% of the country's GDP, 9.7% of the country's population is employed in agriculture. Belarus is among the top ten world leaders in potato production. In 2010, Belarus reached the 2nd place in the world in terms of triticale areas.

The main industries of Belarus are mechanical engineering and metalworking, potash salt mining, chemical and petrochemical industries, electric power, light and food, forestry and woodworking industries. The manufacturing industry makes the largest part of Belarus' GDP — about a quarter on average over the past decades.

Foundry equipment, metal and woodworking tools, technological equipment are also produced in Belarus. Several companies specialize in the production of equipment for light industry, trade and catering.

New plants for the production of chemical fibers and fiberglass, varnishes and paints, and automobile tires were launched. The main types of fertilizers are produced — potash, nitrogen and phosphorus.

Currently, wood is harvested in all regions of Belarus, and furniture manufacturing companies operate in many cities and small towns. There are large cardboard and paper mills.

There are 2,250 companies operating in the light industry of Belarus. 86% of enterprises are mostly privately owned.

The Belarusian dairy industry is a business card of the food industry of Belarus, specializing in the production of milk, butter, cheese, ice cream, canned milk and other products. Over the past few years, Belarus has consistently been among the top five dairy exporting countries in the world.

Belarus has developed IT companies. A high-tech park operates in the republic. According to the results of activity for the first nine months of 2021, the export of resident companies of the hi-tech park exceeded 2.3 billion dollars at a growth rate of 125% compared to the same period in 2020. Today, this figure is more than 30% of the total export of services of Belarus.

The economy of Belarus has a high degree of openness — the share of exports of goods and services in GDP exceeds 60%. Most of the trade turnover of Belarus falls on the CIS countries.
