Bangladesh
Bangladesh is an agrarian state. Agriculture employs 63% of the able-bodied population, it provides 19.7% of GDP. The main cash crop is jute; the acreage under jute occupies 0.5 million hectares. Tea (57.6 thousand tons) and bananas (900 thousand tons) are also grown from crops. The main consumer crop is rice, which is grown on the plains. The rice harvest is about 40 million tons . Among other consumer crops, sugar cane (6.7 million tons), potatoes (4.8 million tons), wheat (about 1 million tons), corn (356 thousand tons) and sweet potatoes (311 thousand tons) stand out.
There is also fishing.
Industry employs 11% of the able-bodied population, it provides 28% of GDP. There are oil refineries and metallurgical plants operating in the country, as well as shipbuilding and ship repair enterprises, as well as enterprises for dismantling decommissioned vessels.
The mining industry plays an important role. Natural gas is being extracted, the main deposits of which are concentrated in the east of the country. Oil production has begun, as well as low-quality coal. Limestone is mined.
Despite the fact that two-thirds of Bangladesh's population is employed in agriculture, more than 3/4 of the country's income comes from the textile industry, which has become attractive to foreign investors due to the low cost of labor and low overhead costs.
The manufacturing industry largely depends on the supply of imported raw materials. There are cotton factories operating in large cities, as well as textile and jute enterprises. Industries related to the processing of agricultural raw materials, as well as plants for the production of mineral fertilizers rely on their own resources. The pulp and paper industry is developed — bamboo paper and cardboard are produced. Sugar factories operate in the eastern and northern regions of the country.
